Ditch the selfie stick! Tourists can now use an AI drone to follow them around and take pictures

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Tourists can now use an AI drone to follow them around and take pictures. Taking off from the palm of your hand, the HOVERAir X1 can record you from 50ft in the air or chase after you at 15mph. The lightweight device uses AI to keep focused on you and can be directed where to go with simple arm movements. It might not be for budget travellers however costing 419 for the basic package compared to around 10 for the humble selfie stick. The device was shown off at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which is known for unveiling the future tech trends about to hit the mainstream.

Snap made a $230 selfie drone called Pixy

Engadget

After years of rumors, Snap has officially revealed its first selfie drone. The pocket-sized device, which is called Pixy, doesn't require a lengthy setup. It doesn't even come with a controller. Instead, you'll be able to choose one of four preset flight paths with the touch of a button. The drone can float, orbit or follow you.

Snap is reportedly working on AR Spectacles and a selfie drone

Engadget

Snap is no stranger to hardware, having released several versions of its Spectacles smart glasses over the years. The next step could be a pair with built-in displays that support augmented reality effects. The next-gen Spectacles will be able to layer Snapchat lenses (or AR effects) onto the surrounding environment without the need to use a smartphone's camera, according to The Information. At least for now, these smart glasses reportedly aren't intended for everyday users. They're said to be geared towards developers and creators, the folks who make many of Snapchat's most popular lenses. It seems Snap is hoping those people will create new lens-style experiences for the glasses, which it may release more broadly in the future.

Hover 2 foldable drone can look for obstacles as it flies itself

Engadget

The Hover Camera Passport foldable drone made quite the impression when it first launched a little over two years ago, and then it received a major update in April last year, which added a smartphone-free mode that automatically tracks and records its owner. Save for the rumored Snap acquisition deal (which Zero Zero Robotics still denies today), we had barely heard from the drone maker since then, but today it's back with a surprise announcement: The launch of its second selfie drone, Hover 2. As you'd expect, the Hover 2 has inherited all the best bits of the Passport, especially its small foldable form factor, sturdy carbon fibre cage enclosure, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (model not specified but it's "four times more powerful than" before), 4K 30fps video capture, face tracking and body tracking. The two drones look similar from afar, though the newer model benefits from more than double the original flight time, jumping from a mere 10 minutes to 19 minutes (but maximum flight time is 23 minutes; more on that later). This may explain the heavier weight of 490 grams or about 1.1 pounds -- almost twice as much as before. When switched on, you'll notice a new major feature on the Hover 2: Its swiveling "Optical Radar" that pops out of the top of the body.

Meet the selfie drone that lives in your phone case

Engadget

Imagine you and a group of friends are at the peak of a mountain after a long hike. It's sunset and the sky is alight; you want to take a photo. You pull out your smartphone, but instead of flipping it around to take a long-armed selfie, you unclip a tiny drone from the back of your phone, make it hover at the perfect height, and snap a series of photos, no extendo-arms required. That's the idea behind Selfly, the drone-in-a-phone-case built by camera and recording company AEE. Selfly is a drone that folds into the back of a phone case, and it includes a camera that can record, live stream and take photos in 1080p and 60fps, using a suite of Sony sensors.

Dobby Pocket Drone Review, Yes, The Selfie Drone Has Arrived

Huffington Post - Tech news and opinion

At a price of $349, we were very impressed with everything ZeroTech packed into such a tiny drone. The only major negative we had with the Dobby is the battery life. In our testing, we were getting about 6 minutes of fly time before we needed to recharge. We were testing in very cold temperatures, so that might have shaved a few minutes off the battery life. Still, even ZeroTech only puts battery life at 9 minutes.
